Originally commissioned for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Wilma stands as a monumental testament to strength, resilience, and transformation. Crafted by renowned French sculptor Pierre Matter, this striking work combines copper, bronze, and recycled steel in a dynamic form that honors the life and legacy of Wilma Rudolph—Olympic champion, civil rights advocate, and global icon of perseverance.
As with much of Matter’s oeuvre, Wilma exemplifies the artist’s ability to breathe new life into discarded industrial materials. The piece reflects not only the evolution of form but also the enduring power of the human spirit—one that triumphs over adversity and defies limitations.
Now, this iconic sculpture can be viewed in the lobby of Pullman Jakarta Indonesia, offering guests and visitors a rare opportunity to experience Matter’s powerful work up close.
Honoring an Icon: Wilma Glodean Rudolph
Born in 1940 in Tennessee as the 20th of 22 children, Wilma Rudolph’s journey is among the most inspiring in the history of sport. Stricken with polio at the age of four and left with a paralyzed leg, Rudolph spent much of her childhood in leg braces. Growing up in the segregated American South, she faced barriers of both race and disability. But through sheer determination and athletic brilliance, she defied expectations.
Discovered by Tennessee State coach Ed Temple, Rudolph went on to represent the United States at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Under the scorching Mediterranean sun and before a crowd of 80,000, she claimed gold in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay—becoming the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games. Dubbed “the fastest woman in the world,” Rudolph shattered records and social barriers alike, later devoting her life to advocating for gender and racial equality.
Her legacy lives on through honors such as the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award and cultural tributes like the short film Unlimited, shown in schools to inspire future generations.
About the Artist: Pierre Matter
Pierre Matter, born in Munster, France, is internationally acclaimed for his visionary sculptures that fuse organic and mechanical forms. With roots in mathematics and science, Matter turned to art to explore deeper themes of evolution, identity, and the intersection of humanity and technology. Drawing inspiration from surrealist masters like H.R. Giger and Salvador Dalí, he has cultivated a distinctive style marked by complex textures, anatomical hybrids, and a profound symbolic narrative.
His sculptures—meticulously shaped through welding, plasma cutting, and patination—embody a steampunk aesthetic and are showcased in prestigious exhibitions from Paris to Miami and Hong Kong to Dubai.
With Wilma, Matter offers more than homage. He forges a timeless tribute that bridges athleticism and artistry, adversity and invention—echoing the very journey of Wilma Rudolph herself.
